Lars Gerhard Nielsen’s Expertise Safety and Growth are the two main issues in my work and career. The last 20 years safety in the Danish shipping and fishing industry has improved very much and the growth of the Danish DIS fleet has been significant. I have enjoyed participating and contributing to this development. Safety From 2001 to 2010, there was approx. 90 fatalities. From 2011 to 2020, this number had decreased to 30 fatalities. Still too many, but much better than before. As maritime accident investigator and later Head of the Maritime Accident Investigation Board (2003-10) I got hands-on experience. I participated in and led many investigations - among others the BALTIC CARRIER/TERN collision, the FU SHAN HAI/GDYNIA collision and the capsize of STEVNS POWER. Even more important is the many work place accidents, which I have investigated. I built up my safety theoretical skills by participating in several Learning Labs at Lunds University, where Sidney Dekker lectured, and I cooperated with Johnny Dyreborg from Det Nationale Forskningscenter for Arbejdsmiljø. There by the quality of the investigations and accident reports was improved. From 2008-10 I chaired EMSA's Consultative Technical Group for Cooperation in Marine Accident Investigation. I participated in the development of the strategy Safety, Health and Environment in Future Quality Shipping 2010 of the Danish Maritime Authority (DMA). The strategy meant a paradigme shift in the perception of safety and the exercise of authority. Becoming Director of Ship Survey and Certification in 2010 gave me the opportunity to implement the strategy. Survey of ships was further developed in the following years on my initiative and supervision. Growth During the last ten years, The Danish International Register of Shipping (DIS) has grown from approx. 500 ships to 737 ships in the beginning of 2021. The tonnage has grown from approx. 10 million to more than 22 million GT in the same period. Denmark is now the 12th largest flag state in the world. I have developed and implemented a new service-mind-set in the DMA. Denmark is in direct competition with other flag states as Singapore, Maltha, Isle of Man etc. Despite crisis in the shipping industry since 2008, we have managed to attract many ships to the Danish flag. I have visited many shipping companies and operation managers during the years and have developed a good cooperation between the DMA and the companies. I try to see things from a company-point-of-view and to provide precise and relevant information and clear decisions.
